Movie review of recent UK release: Knight And Day starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz.

The recent UK release of Knight And Day sees Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz reunited onscreen. While Cameron did have an uncredited role in Cruise hit, Minority Report, this is their second big collaboration since the chilling thriller, Vanilla Sky. The pair proves that once again, their chemistry combined produces worthy watching, as they conjure an explosive mix of romance, action and outright humor.

The Plot

Cruise, as ever a trend, plays secret agent Roy Miller. Miller is a mysterious action man with ambiguous intent. Preying on Diaz's June Havens, Miller is on a mission to overcome a fraud amongst the FBI. However, Miller is suspected of being the true fraud, while Havens, caught in the middle, has to decipher where her trust lies. Carried, largely unconscious, from continent to continent, Havens becomes embroiled in Miller's mission, hoping only to uncover the true crook and return home in time for her sister's wedding.

The Highs

Diaz and Cruise make compelling viewing, with out-loud laughter a given. From a spontaneous plane crash, to unwieldy machine guns and armed gangsters, Diaz's character is unfalteringly witty. Cruise plays on the parodic-style feature with comical charm and heroic ridicule. The film strikes a wonderful balance between action, adventure and comedy. Those fearing another predictable romcom will be pleased to learn that the movie can still bang out surprises.

The Downside

At times, the movie is a little disjointed, reaching well beyond the believable. It requires an open mind, oodles of imagination and a complete disregard for logic. Needless to say, many an action movie relies on the lead character's overriding ability to dodge bullets and shoot down dozens of baddies from ridiculous angles. This film is no exception, sparing the audience repetitive doses of iconic exploits, yet omitting dangerous escapes that leave the viewer a little thirsty for reason.

Overall Rating

If you're in the mood for some light-hearted action, this is the movie to see. Diaz, always charismatic, delivers another alluring performance as fast-thinking Havens. While Cruise, remaining in familiar territory, is consistently pleasant delivering the heartthrob appeal. Keep an eye out for Little Miss Sunshine star Paul Dano, and former Buffy regular Marc Blucas. All in all a great cinematic experience, though you won't be missing too much if you wait for the DVD release. 3/5.
